With a growing focus on sustainability, the growth of electric industrial vehicles has become a significant trend within the logistics and warehousing sectors. This surge is propelled not only by the environmental benefits but also by the evolving legislative framework. As seen in recent regulations like California’s push to phase out non-zero-emission forklifts by 2026, these legislations underscore the growing commitment to reducing carbon footprints across industries.

The rise of electric forklifts

Electric forklifts in the material handling sector are typically equipped with lithium-ion batteries, which are known for their high energy density and long lifespan. These batteries provide a reliable and efficient power source, enabling forklifts to handle demanding tasks over extended periods. Safety is a critical concern for operators, necessitating the disconnection of batteries during battery maintenance or in the event of an emergency to prevent electrical hazards and ensure safe handling.

The rise of electric forklifts

Electric forklifts, equipped with a large-capacity battery, are a fundamental element of this transformative period. These vehicles are crucial for companies aiming to enhance their operational efficiency while adhering to stricter emission standards. As more material handling companies invest in electric fleets, HMI manufacturers such as APEM and IDEC are becoming key players.

Safety measures and E stops

Safety remains paramount in the operation of electric forklifts. One critical safety feature is the emergency stop switch (Estop), which allows operators to swiftly disconnect the battery in case of emergencies. APEM and IDEC supply a robust lineup of Estops designed to integrate seamlessly into industrial electric vehicles, ensuring both operator safety and compliance with international safety standards. This feature is crucial for maintaining forklift operation safety.

The IDEC XA series features a 16mm mounting hole, a compact design, and a bright red mushroom head for high visibility, with IP65 protection for durability in harsh environments.

The XW series, offering a 22mm mounting hole, features a smooth button option to resist dirt buildup, a green mechanical indicator for status visibility, and options for push-turn or push-pull reset methods.

Both series include revolutionary safe break action technology, which reverses spring pressure to ensure NC contacts open if the switch is damaged, preventing potential catastrophic events. The XW series includes up to four safe-break contacts, a depth behind the panel half the size of conventional Estops, and compliance with ISO13850: 2015. These features make the XA and XW series perfect for ensuring the highest safety standards in any facility.

Innovations in battery management systems

Despite the advancements in electric vehicle technology, challenges persist, particularly regarding battery management systems. Many forklift manufacturers currently lack systems to preserve battery charge when vehicles are not in use. This often results in batteries being returned empty after rentals, posing significant operational challenges.

To address this issue, APEM introduces its innovative FNR (Forward-Neutral-Reverse) switches, which can be integrated into a module to interact directly with the battery. This system not only allows for the battery to be turned on and off but also ensures that the battery maintains its charge when the vehicle is not in operation, thus maximizing uptime and reducing unnecessary power depletion. This rocker switch provides the utmost in user comfort, guaranteeing maximum efficiency and highly intuitive operation.

Enhancing user interface with LED indicators

Recognizing the importance of user-friendly interfaces, some OEMs have begun displaying the remaining battery levels directly on the batteries through LED indicators. APEM is well-positioned to extend its technological expertise to develop such indicator systems for OEMs. This capability will enable operators to have real-time access to critical information, enhancing operational efficiency and preventing workflow disruptions due to unexpected power shortages.
